Notes:
MISTAKE IN THE VIDEO when I refer to an FMaj7 chord, please know that I meant FMaj. This was a mistake in the script and notes I wrote out
Step One: 01:05
-Write out your chord progression and Voice lead it (check below for a link on voice leading)
Step Two: 01:21
-Take 1 or 2 notes from each chord and write them above their respective chord in a melody line (feel free to use more, or even leave some chords empty).
-When choosing which notes to put above each chord, keep in mind that notes have personalities, and impact the feel of your melody!
1)Root Note= Sturdy and Reliable
2) 3rd= emotional! (takes on the emotion of the chord you're playing: major or minor)
3) 5th= fun and safe!
4) anything above a 5th= ambiguous and colored by neighboring notes and chords.
Step Three: 04:33
-Mute your chords, and listen to the "skeleton melody" you've written.
-Visualize where you want to go with the melody, how you want to develop it, etc.
Step Four: 05:19
-Return to the first chord and try to build a motif out of your skeleton melody.
-a motif is a short musical idea that repeats throughout a piece (typically 3-6 notes long, but can be longer or shorter).
Step Five: 06:24
-start playing with your motif, try working on repetition and variation.
-variation = change enough that the motif sounds different but can still be recognized if being looked for.
Step Six: 08:32
-re-listen to your melody and add the finishing touches, that you want.
-This part is tricky but will become much easier the more you write!
