Git Remotes Explained: Understanding and Renaming origin

In this Git tutorial, I take a hands-on approach to demonstrate how to rename origin.

Many beginners assume that origin is a special Git keyword or that it represents a particular server such as GitHub. In this lesson, we remove that ambiguity by working directly with a local Git repository and examining what Git actually creates and stores.

In this tutorial, you will learn:

How to rename a remote using git remote rename
What happens to origin/main when origin is renamed to source
How remote renaming affects .git/config
How to verify the tracking relationship using git branch -vv
How to visualize the relationship using git log --oneline --graph --all
Hands-On Demonstration

I start with a local repository and clone it:

git clone centralrepo myproject

Git automatically creates a remote named:

origin

I then inspect it using:

git remote
git remote -v
git remote show origin

I also examine:

cat .git/config

to understand how Git stores the remote URL and branch tracking configuration.

Finally, I rename the remote:

git remote rename origin source

and observe how:

origin/main

becomes:

source/main

This demonstrates an important Git concept:

origin is simply a nickname.

The remote repository does not change. The commits do not change. The repository history does not change. Only the local name used to refer to that remote changes.

Important Git Concepts Covered

Remote

A named reference to another Git repository.

origin

Git's default name for a remote created by git clone. It is configurable and can be renamed.

Remote-Tracking Branch

A local reference that records the last known state of a branch in a remote repository, such as:

origin/main
source/main

Upstream Tracking

A local branch can track a remote-tracking branch, for example:

main → source/main

.git/config

The local Git configuration file that contains information about remotes and branch tracking relationships.

Commands Used
git init
git clone
git branch
git branch -r
git branch -vv
git remote
git remote -v
git remote show
git remote rename
git log --oneline --graph --all
cat .git/config
Key Takeaway

Do not think of origin as something magical in Git.

Think of it as:

origin = a nickname for another Git repository

You could call the remote:

origin
source
backup
github
server
office

The name is configurable.

This lesson is part of a hands-on Git and GitHub tutorial series, where I build Git concepts step by step using practical command-line demonstrations.

If you are learning Git, make sure you understand the difference between local branches, remote-tracking branches, remotes, upstream branches, and the actual remote repository. These concepts become essential when working with GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, or any team-based Git workflow.
