Cut Command:-
The cut command in Linux is used for extracting sections from lines of files or from standard input. It's a versatile tool for manipulating text and is often used to extract specific columns or fields from structured data, such as CSV (comma-separated values) files or tab-delimited text.
The basic syntax of the cut command is as follows:
cut [OPTIONS] [FILE]
Example :-
cut c 5-10 input.txt : to extract characters 5 to 10 from a file. The -c option allows you to extract a range of characters (characters are counted from 1).
cut d ',' -f 2 input.csv : to extract the second column (field) from a comma-separated file. You can use the -d option to specify a delimiter (e.g., a comma or a tab) and the -f option to specify the field or column number you want to extract.
cut d ' ' -f 1,3 input.txt : to extract the first and third fields from a file. You can use a comma-separated list of fields with the -f option to extract multiple fields.
cut c 1-4,11 input.txt :- to extract characters except for 5 to 10. The -c option can be used with a ^ to select characters not in the specified range.
The cut command is a powerful and flexible tool for extracting specific data from text files, making it especially useful for data processing tasks. The choice of options and how you use them depends on the specific structure of the data you are working with.
