If you're building JavaScript games and still handling UI entirely on the canvas you're making your life way harder than it needs to be.
The browser already gives you a powerful UI system for free with HTML and CSS. Instead of manually animating every panel, button, and transition in JavaScript, you can offload that work to CSS and get smooth animations, clean layouts, and scalable UI with just a few lines of code.

In this episode, we take a smarter approach. We build a modular UI system using HTML and CSS panels layered on top of the canvas. This keeps our game logic clean, makes the UI easier to maintain, and gives us flexibility to expand later or even swap to a canvas-based UI if needed.
We’ll implement a main menu and a pause system, connect UI controls to game logic, and introduce a simple state system to manage gameplay flow.
In this video we cover:
Why HTML & CSS are powerful tools for game UI
Creating a reusable panel-based UI system
Building a main menu and pause screen
Toggling UI with a clean active class approach
Connecting UI buttons to game logic
Implementing a simple game state system (play / pause)
Adding keyboard controls (Escape to pause/unpause)
...
Next episode:
We improve our asset loading using JavaScript Promises and we implement a simple audio manager.
This tutorial covers JavaScript game development from an architecture-first perspective. Building reusable game systems in vanilla JavaScript using the HTML5 Canvas API, with no external libraries or frameworks. If you've been searching for a clean, scalable approach to 2D game development in JavaScript, or want to understand how to structure a mini JavaScript game engine from scratch, this video walks you through the exact systems and patterns used in production-ready projects. Great for developers who already know JavaScript and want to take their game projects to the next level.
