abstract is one of the 49 keywords of java.
1) An abstract class is a class which can not be instantiated. This connotes we cannot declare/create/instantiate objects of an abstract class. But remember we can always declare reference variables of an abstract class. More often than not only a super class is declared as an abstract class.
2) an abstract method is declared in an abstract super class which is mandatory to be overridden by all it's sub classes.
