Unity WebGL - How to Fix the Unable to Parse Build Error

Greetings, in this Unity WebGL tutorial we shall be looking at how to fix the error you may encounter when loading your Unity WebGL game that says something along the lines of “Unable to parse Build/[File Name].framework.js.br” followed by more text. This error appears in a red box ontop of your Unity WebGL game when it loads.

There are 2 easy ways to fix this. The first way is suggested and possible if you are on Unity 2020.1 or above. You want to go to build settings, then to the WebGL Player settings. Then go to publishing settings and locate Decompression fallback, then tick the box next to it to enable it.

The decompression fallback option enables Unity to automatically embed a JavaScript decompressor into your build. This decompressor corresponds to your selected compression method, and decompresses your content if the browser fails to do so. You should consider using Decompression Fallback if you have less experience with server configuration, or if server configuration is unavailable to you.

Now all you need to do is rebuild your Unity webgl game and any Unable to Parse build errors should be fixed. Enabling decompression fallback is all you need to do.

If you are in an older version of Unity, you need to try a different compression format in the publishing settings or disabling compression alltogether. Both aren't ideal options. You could also upgrade your project to a more recent version of Unity.

This error can happen if the build compression was enabled but web server hosting the content was misconfigured to not serve the file with HTTP Response Header "Content-Encoding: br" or gz present. By enabling decompression fallback, you let the Javascript decompresser Unity includes in your Unity WebGL game to decompress the game, which fixes the issue.

This fix is great if you want to upload your game to itch.io, github pages, any website or run the game locally.
