For some dumb reason, code requires a railing on the side of stairs.
But these stairs are beautiful and we don’t want to cover them up with an ugly railing.
So, we’re going to use glass.
The first thing I did was put down painters’ tape and mark out where the brackets go.
This wood is maple and it’s hard, so I drilled pilot holes to make sure it wouldn’t split.
I used 3” T30 screws to install the hardware.
There’s solid wood blocking behind the maple.
Next, I used suction cups to move the glass- you want to pump them up till you don’t see the red line. If you see red, you’re dead.
This is ½” thick tempered glass and it’s pretty heavy.
Once the glass was in place I attached the hardware.
It has rubber pads inside to protect the glass and to keep it from moving.
There's two Allen Head screws that draw the clamp together.
This bottom piece was definitely the hardest, it was really heavy and because of all the angles and multiple brackets I had to use shims to get everything to line up- but in the end we got it to work.
I’ve never worked with glass before, but I’m really happy with how this turned out. Now it’s safe for everyone to use. @hausplans
