New Tacoma comes with orange peel straight from the dealer.
Orange peel is a paint texture defect where the clear coat or base coat
dries with a slightly bumpy, uneven surface that resembles the skin of
an orange instead of laying flat and glossy. It happens during the
factory painting process and is usually caused by issues like spray gun
distance, paint viscosity, booth temperature and humidity, or the paint
not having enough time to properly level out before curing. While some
very light orange peel exists on almost every mass-produced car and is
considered within normal factory tolerance, a texture this noticeable
on a brand-new vehicle is a legitimate quality control miss, not just
something to brush off.
The frustrating part is that most buyers never think to actually
inspect paint texture closely before driving a new vehicle off the lot.
Everyone checks for scratches and dents, but a factory finish like this
often gets missed entirely until it's caught on camera weeks later, at
which point it's a much harder conversation to have with the dealership
about getting it corrected or compensated.
If you're picking up a new vehicle, it's worth running your hand and
eyes over the panels in good lighting before you ever leave the lot.
Catching something like this on day one is a completely different
conversation than catching it a month in.
