Hey, it’s Matt! In this video, I’m going to show you how to add automatic chapters to your YouTube videos.
First things first, you need to be signed into your YouTube channel. I’m already logged into the channel you’re watching this on, which is a bit meta.
If your menu isn’t visible, just click on the hamburger menu, which is those three lines stacked on top of each other. This will open a sidebar where you can click on "Full Content." Here, you’ll see your scheduled videos, which are the ones that haven’t gone live yet.
I’m selecting a Canva video that’s about adding a new page to Canva. Next, click on the pen icon to open the video details section.
You’ll notice I already have timestamps listed here. These timestamps act as chapters, providing time codes and descriptions for each section of the video.
It’s super important to have these because they make navigating your video easier for viewers. Now, if you want to automate this process, YouTube has an option for that too.
Scroll down to the video description section, past playlists and promotion options, until you find the "Automatic Chapters" checkbox. Mine is already selected, but yours might not be.
If you want YouTube to add these chapters automatically, make sure to check that box. However, I have to be honest—my experience with automatic chapters hasn’t been the best.
They’re not always super accurate, which is why I prefer to add my own manually. It doesn’t take long, and I find it gives me better control over what my viewers see.
YouTube claims that chapters and key moments enhance the viewing experience, and you can overwrite any automatic suggestions by creating your own chapters in the video description. If you want to learn more about this process, there’s a link available for further reading.
Once you’ve selected the checkbox for automatic chapters, don’t forget to save your video to apply the changes. I keep this feature enabled on all my videos, but I still go back and manually add chapters for clarity.
So, that’s it! Just head to the video you want to edit, check the box for automatic chapters, and you’re good to go.
