▬▬▬▬ Video Transcript ▬▬▬▬
Hey everyone, it's Matt! In this video, I'm going to show you how to blend two data sources in Looker Studio.
I'm currently in the backend of my Looker Studio project, where I've got some Google Analytics data from various websites. There are a couple of ways to blend data sources, and it really depends on the type of data you're working with.
To kick things off, I’ll show you how to start a blend. You just need to click on the "Blend" option in the toolbar.
It might look a bit complicated at first, but don't worry—I'll walk you through it step by step. Once you're ready, click "Add a Blend" to create a new blend.
For this example, I’ll use one of my websites called Wisdom Sparks. You can name your blend at the top, which helps keep things organized.
At this point, I haven't selected any dimensions or metrics yet, so let's move on to that. Now, we need to join another table, which might sound confusing, but it’s just another way of saying you’re adding another data source.
So, I’ll select another website called Capital Reads. Now we have two data sources to work with!
Next, we’ll select our dimensions. I know these data sources well, so I’ll go with the date for both.
For the metrics, I’ll choose something straightforward, like sessions. Keep in mind that your data sources and metrics might differ, so adapt as needed.
After that, we need to configure the join. Depending on your goals, you might choose different types of joins, but for this video, I typically go with a left outer join.
It’s essential to know that the specifics can vary based on your data. Once I’ve added sessions as a metric, I can decide if I want to keep them in the join operator.
If not, I can easily delete them. After configuring everything, I just hit save.
Now, I’ve successfully blended the two data sources: Wisdom Sparks and Capital Reads. There’s a lot of data being pulled in, and I can save it for future use.
Blending data in Looker Studio has many applications, and while I won’t dive into every use case today, I hope this gives you a solid foundation. If you found this video helpful, please give it a thumbs up and subscribe for more content like this!
