After Effects Tutorial: Create Black Cinematic Bars

Apply this effect to an adjustment layer, keep it above all other layers, lock it and you're all set.

This is the easiest way I've found to make the cinematic wide screen bars in After Effects and it effects all layers underneath it within the comp by applying it to an adjustment layer.
