You might have heard people claim that having big biceps "isn't functional." Or that bicep curls are only a vanity exercise for bodybuilders.

But, in fact, that couldn't be further from the truth! Not only are biceps (and curls) extremely functional... they might actually be MORE important for real functional strength, than many other muscles.

We're used to lifting barbells off the ground. To do this, you can grab the weight with your arms locked out, pack your lats, and then lift with your legs.

Now try that with a log or a rock. Of course, you can't hold those objects like that! And so you're going to need to lift the weight by grabbing it with both hands - possibly rolling it onto your forearms. If it's a rock or a sandbag, you might need to bear-hug the weight and pull it in towrads you.

In short: you're going to be somewhat "curling" the weight up with you as you stand. At the very least, you will be maintaining an isometric curl.

Imagine climbing a tree: either you're going to be reaching up to each brach, or you're going to be pulling yourself towards the trunk. You might try to conserve energy by keeping the arms straight... but you're still, ultimately, going to need to bend them a little from time to time.

The same is true for countless other activities outside of the gym: wrestling, carrying shopping, digging a ditch... All these things require bicep strength.

It's not that biceps aren't functional: it's that the gym is making all of our lifts easier than they should be!
