A PLAGUE UPON THE LAND
This 28 minute video tells the story of a devastating disease -- onchocerciasis (river blindness) -- that was prevalent in seven countries of the Volta river basin in West Africa. It was filmed and recorded in villages throughout the region in the 1970s. Elimination of the disease, which was a serious impediment to development, was the goal of the World Bank's first intervention into the health sector. It succeeded, with enormous help from the villages and countries involved, as well as from other international agencies. It is arguably one of Bank's most successful interventions in Africa.
