Guess what???
Every system has an API.
Or
It’s a part of their bucket list.
But do you know why screen scraping is way cooler???
Well…
APIs are wonderful if you truly need to interact with the system
But…
If you want to extract data from legacy application/software,
you got to resort to screen scraping!!!
You might wonder
What is #screenscraping?
In short, it means reading text data from a computer terminal screen.
And/or a piece of programming that
mediates between legacy applications
and the modern user interfaces.
Designed to interact with outdated devices and interfaces,
Screen scraping enables legacy programs to remain functional.
In other words,
What they contain in the form of logic and data
can still be utilized.
Now, what is #API then?
Application Programming Interface (API) is software
that permits two applications to talk to each other.
For example, when you use Facebook, send an instant message or check the weather on the phone, you are using an API.
What about the technology used?
Well, API uses different technology like POSIX (for an operating system),
REST (for web API), SOAP (for web API)
On the other hand…
Screen scraping uses technology like OCR, Telnet etc.
And what about availability?
Application/software would make changes or updates to their features
But…
It would reflect in API months later…
However,
When you scrape the content off the application/software,
you get what you see.
In short, you can easily verify the data.
More accountability, don’t you think?
Because you can compare the data collected with
what you actually see on the application/software
Then there is a rate limit…
Most APIs will have their own rate limits.
These rate limits are normally based on time.
Which time, you might ask…
The time between two consecutive queries, a number of concurrent queries and the number of records returned per query…
Guess what, no such limits apply to screen scraping!!!
Wondering about its accessibility???
Well, using API, you can always get all the data you want.
But
Screen scraping allows you to scrap all the data you see on the user interface!
