Hey everyone, I’m Matt, and today I’m going to show you how to delete a sitemap from Google Search Console. So, once you log into Google Search Console, you’ll see all your properties in a dropdown menu.
Make sure to select the right one. You’ll land on the main overview section.
For this demo, I’m using a random site that’s not super important right now, but it’ll work just fine for our purposes. Now, scroll down to the sitemaps section.
Click on that, and you’ll see the sitemap that’s currently submitted. Typically, for WordPress sites, the sitemap URL looks like this: `/sitemap.xml`.
You’d enter that here and hit submit. But today, we’re focusing on deleting a sitemap.
You might want to do this if you’re looking to refresh Google’s memory about your site. It’s often recommended to leave the sitemap deleted for about 15 to 20 minutes before resubmitting it to jog Google’s mind.
To delete the sitemap, you can’t just click the three dots next to it. Those options are grayed out, and you actually need to click on the sitemap itself.
Once you do that, you’ll see details like when it was last read and the pages discovered from this sitemap. Now, look up at the top right corner for those three dots again.
Click there, and you’ll see the option to remove the sitemap. Go ahead and click on “Remove sitemap.” You’ll get a prompt asking if you really want to do this.
Just click “Remove,” and just like that, the sitemap is gone. If you want to resubmit it later, just grab the correct URL, paste it back in, and hit submit.
I’m going to do that now for this test project. I’ve added it back in, and you can see it was submitted today, June 10th.
It was last read on May 16th, which is what the previous version showed. So, everything looks good!
And that’s how you delete a sitemap in Google Search Console. Just head to the sitemaps section, click on the sitemap, hit the more symbol, and choose “Remove sitemap.”
