I’ve been training since I was about 11 years old. I don’t even know what I’d look like as an adult who doesn’t work out!
In that time, what progress have I made?
Well, I’ve gotten stronger. I’ve built a lot more muscle. Then I’ve lost that strength and that muscle. Then I’ve gotten it back. Then lost it again.
I’ve never been completely out of shape, but I’ve certainly gained and lost muscle over the years.
That’s actually inevitable. Unless you’re going to be a gymcel your entire life… AND you’re lucky enough to never get sick… then you’re going to have periods where you aren’t training as well as you’d like. In that time, you’ll lose muscle.
Now, if you’re being really cynical, you might ask: what’s the point, then? If you’re just going to lose the muscle anyway?
That’s not really the way to think about it. Rather, think about being the best you can be at that current point in life - or at least better than you would be if you didn’t train at all!
Consider, as well, that it’s much easier to gain new muscle when you’ve got experience. Things like myonuclei stick around even after the muscle is gone, meaning you build it back quicker and stronger.
But more to the point - it’s what you learn. The technique for your squat and deadlift, for example. Knowing what works for your body. That stuff will stick around forever.
Likewise, the skills and abilities you learn will (mostly) stick around. My handstands come and go, sometimes. But things like jumping rope or hitting a heavy bag are like riding a bike - as you ingrain those skills they stick around. Same goes for a kettlebell swing or a cartwheel.
Mobility is easy to maintain, too. With just a little bit of practice, every now and then, I’ll always be able to get into a deep resting squat.
Not all gains are visible. In fact: the most important ones are not!
